Author Topic: Strange computer error.  (Read 1072 times)

Okay guys, I need your computer knowledge to help me figure out why this weird thing that happened to my computer.

Upon turning on my desktop computer, it seemed to load as usual, until the "HP" screen disappeared. It was on for 10 minutes or so, and it was blank. Just a black screen. The screen was on, the computer was still on, and it still wasn't working. I have a theory as to why it might be doing this, and it has to do with our new printer. We recently bought a new Epson Artisan 800 printer, and installed it yesterday. After the printer had been installed for awhile, some error message came on mentioning something about "ArcSoft" and files not being found for it. Then, a few of those boxes later, a window came up that said "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive E:." E: is my DVD ROM drive, and I was not trying to run any programs at the time (I was on Blockland, in fact) and it seems odd to me that my computer would be requiring a disk to be in the DVD ROM drive. We don't usually have a disk in there anyway. I tried clicking every button on the box multiple times, but it was persistent. It didn't go away the entire time I was on the computer. I later turned it off, and turned it back on today, when this happened.

As of right now (Literally, it just started working about 5 seconds before I typed this), the computer is working, but I'd still like to hear anyone's input, just in case it doesn't fix itself next time. Plus, I'm just curious as to what happened. Plus plus, I want to know if it's some sort of virus. D:

that printer you installed. have you tested it and it prints fine?

it could have been installed improperly, and the found new hardware popups might have been what was coming up, of course clicking them could have started the driver search. also why it was trying to use the E drive.

why the comp didnt work when it started up i don't know, drivers all fudged up can do that.
i would have attempted next to start it up and safe mode and rolled back some installations to fix.

Well missing files for your printers program shouldn't make your computer not turn on.

EDIT: Olol Bisjac beat me to it I think.

maybe.

he said it got as far as the HP screen. thats just the motherboard spashscreen.
windows wasnt opening can be caused by any of million hardware or driver issues that usually you wouldn't think mattered.

of course the old fashioned; "wait and do nothing but maybe a restart" fix seemed to have worked.
the greatest fix you can ask for

I would assume installing software for a printer wouldn't affect anything but maybe it pausing a bit at restart so it could finish installing, like what seems to happen for me at times.

To install the software, I had to install it with the disk first, then plug in the printer afterward. No "Found new hardware" windows came up, and it said I should have closed them if they had.

The only thing I can really think of is that the computer's trying to boot off the printer's firmware. That's happened to some old scanner of mine on an old computer :D However, it just starting filling the screen with random commands, so I have no idea for you.

Sure the BIOS didn't get mess up?
Also the next time when you start it try to uninstall it and install it again. Maybe some files didn't installed correctly.

It was weird when I first installed the software, when the setup was finished, it asked me, "Are you sure you want to uninstall this software?"
I said no. Maybe I should have said yes. But what would it have been uninstalling?
