Scripting Programs for Mac

Please i get more and more frustrated every day are there any scripting programs for the mac?

Is there any basic text editor? Notepad-esque programs work. I'm not familiar with macs, though.

TextEdit comes with the computer. That should work from what I've heard about this kind of stuff.
