Author Topic: I have a small guitar amp issue (half-stack)  (Read 712 times)

I recently got a Peavey Valveking 100 amp head. This is an all tube amp and registers 100 watts or 16 ohms (But it has a switch for 4, 8, or 16 ohms). Since I don't have a cabinet, I plugged it into a 200 watt Randall combo amp. The randall speakers max out at 4 ohms (I had the switch on 4 as well), so I have to turn the head's volume up around 7 or 8 to match a drumset. This isn't a problem when I'm using distortion, but the tubes start to distort around 6 when it's clean.

As for the point of this, will buying a 16 ohm cabinet solve this problem? This might be common sense, but I'm still learning about halfstacks. I expect powerful speakers to allow me to reach the same volume with the master turned down, but some confirmation would help.

Are you using the speaker out or line out?

What you could do is (if you want to sacrifice a mono 1/4" cable) cut and strip the cable at one end, de-solder the speaker in the combo and solder the cut cable to it.  plug into speaker out, and enjoy!  (be sure to test the ohms on the speaker)

There is no line out. Heads are meant for nothing other than speakers. The power has to have speakers to go to, or the power produced would destroy the amp. Sorry, but you really didn't answer my question. I'm not trying to mod the combo. I'm asking about speakers designed for heads.
