I want to start working on making vehicles, but i don't know where to start!

I just want a few questions answered.  What do people use to make 3d models of cars/planes (has to be free)
And what do people use to create the code to make them work? 

If this is in the wrong forum, then i don't know where else to go, since the other help forums is either on map help or coding help.
