I live in a rural area, you can hear gun shots hundreds of feet away. Your typical 20 gauge shotgun is very loud within 500 feet. A smaller rifle is audible, but much much quieter.

I live in the mountains. It's amazing how the sound from a rifle can almost wash over the surrounding area as it bounces off the mountains.
