external hard drive

What do you mean by recovery disk?

All you need to reformat is the XP disc that you originally installed on the computer.  Simply place it in the drive while the computer is booted, exit out of any kind of XP prompts, then restart, go into your BIOS, change the boot order so that your CD-ROM drive is the first one to boot, then, after saving and exiting, wait for the prompt that says "Press any key to boot from CD..." and do as it says.  If you have a RAID configuration of hard drives, you'll have to press F6 when prompted at the bottom of the screen, and then load the drivers in from a floppy disk.  Otherwise, just let it go until it gets to the format screen.  You don't want a "repair" installation, so press ESC to get out of that, and then, when given a list of partitions, select the one Windows is installed on, and delete the partition.  Then, reinstall XP!

When I bought my computer it didn't come with an installation disc, but it forced me to make a backup boot copy when I activated it for the first time. So unless he has that or has a sector of his HD separated for reformatting or reverting to a previous setting, he's stuff outta luck. (S.O.L.)

If you have a RAID configuration of hard drives

What makes you think he has this?

What makes you think he has this?

What do you think "if" means?

Most prebuilt walmart or best buy computers have that D drive that is meant for recovery.
I dunno where in control panel to look for that. But the pooter should fix itself.

I don't know why people are giving him advice on partitions and running cd's he clearly said he didn't have. He's not asking for obscure techical help starfishs.

My point was that the rest of the paragraph was unneeded and would probably confuse him.

You don't need a recovery disc to format it.

Just get any copy of Windows XP, format it and reinstall.

Um.

"If you have a RAID, do this.  Otherwise, do this instead.  Then, to finish up (whether you have a RAID or not) do this."

I was simply going step by step.
