Deselect them. Go to the select tab, and click the "joints" bar and then click somewhere there are no joints. Of course there are many other way to do it, but this is the easiest one and the one I use the most.

Don't select anything so all the model is unselected. (Select parts that you don't want smooth)
Then go tho groups and click "auto smooth", then go to vertex and press "Unweld". Then return to the groups tab and click auto smooth again, so It's deselected and then go to vertex and click "Weld together.

Thank you, but "weld together" isn't on the vertex menu.
