What is a Soundtrack?

WhatevaGuy and I are working on a Science Fair project and were wondering: What exactly does a soundtrack (Like in Audacity), measure? It looks like it only measures the amplification of the track, but isn't there something to do with the pitch of it? Thanks.

I've never really made a soundtrack before but im guessing you make music on a music program of course and then save it in your documents and other stuff i dont know but it has to do something with files
