Author Topic: New computer  (Read 1220 times)

So I turned in those Saving Bonds I was talking about and now have $1900 in the bank, and I need a new computer bad I am using a 4 year old laptop after my old desktop busted, I am willing to spend 800-900 for it, although most of you know I am pretty good at building my own computer, and can probably do it myself, usually when I post things on other people's "build a computer" threads and other people offer other solutions I research them and realize they were right, so lets hear your guy's ideas.

My current thoughts: Biggest issue is the CPU, for an 800 comp do I want an i5 over a phenom, a phenom quad is about 40 bucks less than an i5, or do I want to shell out for an i7 and lose money for the graphics.

I want an Nvidia card or cards, because I am a linux fan and ATI does not have much support for linux. I was wondering if I should go old school and get dual 9800s or look into the 200 series of cards.

Things I do not need much help on: Mobo, I will prob get a dual slot mobo that will support sli just for future upgrades, I will get windows 7 since I am using vista atm, and I will be getting just the cheapest ram that will take advantage of my mobo and CPUs capabilities.

Please use Tigerdirect.com for your suggestions, although I prefer Newegg Tigerdirect does not tax me in California and will save me a good penny to use it.

Buy a cheap computer with pizza stains. :D

No and No. The Phenom II X4s are good.

He could buy an i7 if he wants to.

He could do a lot of stuff if he wants too. What he shouldn't do with today's parts is skimp on graphics power for unneeded processing power.

Okay phenom it is, phenom will last a long time too since most games still can't even use 4 cores so it will grow as companies take advantage of them. Now I need to determine if I want like dual 9800s or a 200 series, I am a pro at ATI cards, never dealed with Nvidia but like I said I wanna dual boot linux and ati barely works on linux and sometimes doesn't.
