Author Topic: Remotely accessing Blockland Server  (Read 1519 times)

VNC and Remote Desktop aren't ideal because we don't need the whole desktop and window manager, just the console. We're trying to squeeze a little more performance out of public wifi. I don't have a problem with remote desktop since I'd be controlling the server from the computer at my house but MamaLuigi has a netbook he carries around.

i believe if im not mistaken, tightvnc for windows has an option that you can set the viewable area to a specific size, therefore you should have some gain to your speed

Possibly. The banner would have to be set via an online interface.

With the new website it'll be possible to configure your server using a web interface and then update the server with those settings - without ever having to join it. A banner could be another configurable option.

v14?
I just tried today and I can't run the blockland client in wine but the server oddly enough seems to work fine so far (except I'm getting a box telling me I have no key entered since it is a new install). If I copy key.dat from a v13 installation on my linux desktop into v14 then it should run.

I will have to configure everything through the console though since the blockland client isn't running.
EDIT: or just edit the preference files I forgot about that

I'll make sure to take a look at it.

RTB
We already know about this. It's not out yet. We also don't know if it will include complete access to the console (for example, viewing the chat on the server) or just common options like changing the map, clearing bricks, etc.

Tom

Does the server still respond after the box comes up. I've tried a few weeks ago, shortly after WINE 1.1.41 came out, and it would freeze after auth.

The problem is that the WINE DLLs lack some functions Blockland needs. Blockland freezes up after the auth server disconnects. I tried using the Windows DLLs, but WINE says it won't work.

Hey, what do you know, it doesn't work. It successfully authenticates but freezes when trying to post to the master server. It only worked earlier because I was getting the no key error so it wasn't trying to post the server. Interestingly enough LAN dedicated works just fine, I'm going to try opening it as a remote console on another computer of mine tomorrow just to see if it works. I'll update the thread with the results.

It's an unfortunate problem but I think almost everyone running linux on the forums is either multi-booting or has access to a computer with windows or osx on it so I don't think changing it would be a very high priority.

Right now it's looking like we're going to be running blockland on either windows server 2k3 or 2k7. By the time we have the computer built RTB4 will probably be out. We'll forward a port for vnc just incase we need to access the console or restart the server if it crashed. WinSCP can handle mod installation.

Thanks anyway for the help everyone.
