Author Topic: What happens when game servers go down?  (Read 792 times)

I've always wondered, in the future, what will happen to all the game servers. For example; in a hundred years, will World of Warcraft realms still exist? Will the game be shut down forever? Old games like pong didn't use servers, so we will have to wait to see what the future holds. It will be one sad, sad day when the blockland master server gets shut down forever.

Then blockland master server will be runned by some website or stuff.

Newer versions of games will be made and servers for old version will be shut down eventually and maybe released for free. Or game just dies and servers get shut down eventually.
Hundred years is probably too much, by that time we have virtual reality. Lol.

motherforgeters closed down the EA skate server :(

Depends on the game, its great when the game developers for these games release a patch or a way for players to change the master server list or have a way to connect via IP directly. Games such as WoW will never technically die, sure Blizzard will stop its master servers but people have already made private servers for it in which full patched up players can join by changing 1 file and registering to a website.

Aliens Vs Predator 2 had a community patch that lets you join via a community owned master list and they even improved the network code for in-game. Overall it depends on the game itself, some very unpopular games will die and will only be played by friends rather then servers (Age of Empires), if its console then its stuffed anyway.
