What would happen if I took one of those cables with 2 .35 mm audio plugs on the ends and plugged them into both my microphone jack and headphone? Would it play my speakers through my microphone? Or would it just fry it...

i did that but with two macs one of which was recording it on garageband so when i have iTunes on shuffle sometimes i get this song thats a really high pitched noise that was the feedback.
