The quality is clear as long as you don't rub your fingers all over the screen and get oil all on it.
Not to mention converting .avi or any other movie file that isn't used by Zune software is a total pain in the ass.
But yes it's pretty clear quality on the Zune HD. FYI the "HD" in Zune HD represents the fact that it can do great 3D graphics, play 720p movies when plugged into a TV and receive HD radio signals.
Btw, HD Radio is actually really awesome.
