I was curious as to how the whole "paintable vehicles" concept works. I know that the default material automatically becomes the color of the paintcan when you spray it, but what about the non-default materials like with the Jeep? How do you make it so that a mesh is lightened/darkened to a different shade of that material when its painted rather than just all one color?

Seriously? 12 views and no replies? I know that SOMEONE has figured this out; as many non-default models feature it.

If you dont get what Im asking, look:

In the above picture, parts of the vehicle are grey instead of white. pretty basic/nice. But when you paint it...

That grey turns to a darker red shade rather than it being red and grey. This is the issue I am having, when I paint a model, any colors that are non-default materials stay the same. How do I make them change shades?

You need a transparent texture by what i can gather. Try using Paint.net.

Make a totally transparent 16x16 texture named "blank". Texture the parts of the model you want to re-color when painted.

Semi-transparent gray textures produce those darker colorshiftable areas. black25/50/75 produce these effects.

I thought so... but I wasnt sure. Id rather know first before I try getting my model in-game to test and then having to go and completelty re-texture it later.
