Author Topic: Windows Drive Consistency Check  (Read 878 times)

Is Windows Drive Consistency Check legit? It just scanned my drive when I turned on my computer. This is the first time I've ever gone through this "check". I'm suspicious of it being malware/virus so I'm scanning my computer right now out of paranoia. So is this check legit or do you think it's a virus?

It's normal and you shouldn't skip it.

Wow only like 2% into my scan and it already picked up a file. It's not saying what kind of malware/virus it is yet since the scan isn't done. :/

Oh really? Ok thanks. I'm still scanning my computer though since AdAware already picked something up.

I don't think it has anything to do with scanning for malware. Sounds like something like defragging or something.

Another reason why I like having a Mac.

Yeah I know but I'm scanning for viruses myself. Not the windows program.

Because you can't figure out how to work Windows?

This is hard drive maintenance. Having a Mac OS does not make your hard drive immune from disk errors.

You are a perfect example of the worst kind of Maccigarette.

Wow, you guys really shat bricks didn't you?

This is very normal.
Although thay start to do alot of disk checks on certain weeks.

Also, Malware or Viruses are not the result of this.

Ok, noted. I'm still scanning my computer though since AdAware did pick something up. Must be from all the research software I've been downloading.

Sometimes Windows will run a virus scan on boot if you've got a program that does it, like avast.

The consistency check doesn't have anything to do with viruses or malware though. It usually means some change didn't get made correctly on the drive (power outage or a system crash resulting in the drive getting turned off while it's in the middle of doing something is a common cause) and the file system doesn't like the state it's in. Windows fixes it by itself and it's usually not a problem. You can force it by typing chkdsk /f in command prompt.

Macs do the same thing, the command to do it is fsck -fy and you can read the documentation here.

I also forgot to say that I got the Disk Check about 2 months ago. Although it did it too much, but it started to do very few and stoped doing disk checks.
