Author Topic: Repairing a computer from 1993  (Read 3625 times)

It's old and he took it apart?
At this point he probably just wants to get data off the hard drive.

I know, but he needs to get it running.  Mis mounted boards could be part of the problem, or a deftective power supply.

It's missing a fatherboard.

Take Hard Drive
Put in new computer
Boot
???
Profit!

The hard drive would not fit in new computers (connectors), but I do have a computer from 1999 that would work.  If you are interested I could try it in mine if it was shipped to me.

Haha no, the connection wires will be fine, if they arn't just go to any used computer part store and buy an adapter. It's only 1993 after all. You seriously should just put the hard drive in your computer and copy/paste the files.

There must've been another motherboard in his life.

Sata, Pata, and ata are in compata!  But you could use an adapter.

I did something like this once, actually.

Except it was a ~1995 computer with, you guessed it, Windows 95 on it!
But all I had to do was dig up my dads box of computer parts.
Literally, you know those plastic toy boxes? Well he had one completely filled up to the top with random computer parts.

Ok, so I took a look and saw these things:

A) That actually freaked me out the first time I saw it. I just recently unmounted that card and went to throw it away thinking it was snapped in half, and realized that it was actually designed to be on a slant like that. It's a serial card, the entire chip itself is an odd shape. I will upload a photo tomorrow of it so you can see for yourself.

B) The power supply, I need to check that out as well.

C) I took the disc drive out so you could see the hard drive... I booted the whole machine up before I took it apart and it worked. I was just doing some exploring here.
