Yep, that's how I learned.

It's how every single one of my damned friends learned as well, sadly I have not quite grasped it yet.
Try ScatteredSpace forums. Kinex made a very helpful tutorial.

I was mostly self taught, but I had someone I could get help from.

Experimenting using existing scripts as references. This was back in rtb 1.045.
I didn't start out by making guns that do tons of damage and have crappy emitters.
I started out by modifying how the guns shoot, seeing what can be done and how it works.
My first experiment was making a projectile that fires additional projectiles in a certain way.
Of course, after fixing many syntax errors, I got it to work.

I learned to script by messing around with an SVD's script, trying to make it have a longer reload time, but ended up making it shoot through everything, and tried editing the script again to fix that, messed up, tried fixing that, and so on.. Then tried editing other weapons and items' scripts, failing and re-trying. That was about 1.4 years ago.

The best way to learn basic BL add-on scripting is by trial and error, re-trying, and having the time to do it.

Lucky.
I've been looking at the documentation, printed part of it out so I could have it with me on the go, then my parents told me we were close to running out of paper.

I haven't had time to look at it online, sadly.

I'm mostly going to be experimenting with server mods, ammo mods, weapons, and some equipment. Possibly vehicles.
