EDIT: Aha, fread() had some stupid char limit. Fixed it.

Why don't you use file_get_contents(filepath) and file_put_contents(filepath, data)?

I wrote a glitchy .php chat too but that used file commands to write the chat on to a separate .txt file that was then take by another .php file and put onto an array, echo'd and displayed inside an iframe to make the chat it self scrollable, good times.
