Author Topic: Router Question  (Read 487 times)

If I were to put a router into my room, and hook it up to the desktop, could I access the internet through my dad's router? I don't know much about routers and internet access points.

If so, Would it have to be the same brand of router or just the same frequency?

I was looking at PCI wireless thingies, but the Walmart by me doesnt carry them in store, and i don't want to order online. Would these be better quality, though?

So you have your internet like this now:
outside -> modem -> dad's router -> your router -> computer
?

Okay, here is my dad's computer. He has the modem hooked up to the router, and that broadcasts out to the laptops.

I have no router on my computer, and I guess yes, that's what I want to do.

You should be able to connect to his router. I don't see why not. I'm not sure why you'd need a router in your room to connect to your dad's router? Are you talking about a switch instead?

Well, currently my computer is in the living room. I want to put it into my room, and have a router that I could buy from Walmart or so, put it into my room, and have it connect through the internet through my dad's router wirelesslly. Do you get what I'm trying to say?

If so, could I do that?

Eh. I'm kinda confused on this. My dad is the network wizard. I'm more of a software guy. I'll have to ask him when I get a chance.

Wait, would this do the trick?

you just need a wireless receiver if you want to connect your computer to your dads wifi
