Something could've fallen on top of it in the fall.
Or he might not have carpeting, and it's been falling on hard stone/wooden flooring.
Or maybe it's had so many knocks, that this final fall was the last one it could take. It's not impossible that some of the wires on the inside simply got knocked so many times that they've snapped or disconnected.
