How do I replace textures in Portal?

I just downloaded the Portal 2 texture pack for Portal and I'm confused as to how to replace the current textures with the new ones. Several Google searches have returned no helpful results, could anyone give me some help with this?

The downloaded pack should look just like the file directory for  portal on your computer.
If so, go to the main file and move it in the same folder with that same name.
It should overwrite all the textures but mix the files together.

Right, they do resemble the default directory, but am I going in the right direction by opening the game cache file and placing the replacement textures inside of it? Because I don't see them anywhere else but the .gcf file.
