Another solution is to keep xfce and get more RAM instead. It shouldn't be so hard, since you can just go to a dump and look for computers.

I don't know one that's near, and if you haven't already read my past comment, the designers were smoking rocks when they made this and made it very hard to put RAM in.

When you posted that I decided to re-read the whole thread. I still couldn't find you stating that. Oh well.
I think the easiest computer to mod I've seen yet was some quite old IBM that was intentionally made so you could swap pretty much everything without even a screwdriver.
