I'm here as a witness to say that it actually is a lot more convenient than you would think to have those buttons on your mouse.
Though I can't see using them on different sides, my laptop mouse has both back and forward on the same side.
The thumb side by the way.

Backwards is on the left, forwards is on the right but you can't see it.

It's much easier than clicking the backwards or forwards button on the top of the internet page.
