In need of computer assistance

Basically, I was playing GTA IV on my desktop. Suddenly, the game freezes, the screen goes blank, and it shuts off. I tried to start it back up again, but to no avail. I tried to diagnose the problem myself, however, none of the hardware smelled burnt, so I fiddled around with it a bit more. I un-plugged an plugged everything back in. Occasionally, when I pressed the power button, the fans would turn (all of them) for about a quarter of a second.

Does anybody have any idea what is wrong?

Check your graphics card, if your computer's not running, your motherboard or something else may be overheating, is the computer in question a laptop or a PC with a tower?
