Author Topic: Windows XP or Linux?  (Read 514 times)

So I'm buy a new gaming computer, and because I'm too cheap fighting the power, I don't want to purchase Windows 7 to go along with the computer.

I have a Windows XP install disc lying around, and I want your opinion on this, should I install some sort of Linux OS (the only one I'm familiar with is Ubuntu) or should I install Windows XP?

Keep in mind that I want to use the computer to play games

If you want games, XP of course. A lot of games have been made for windows, and I've never figured out how to get Steam on my Linux system.

If the computer uses Serial ATA instead of IDE (what new computer doesn't?), you may want to check if the disk supports formatting SATA drives. Otherwise, I'd go with Ubuntu.
XP if it's possible, Linux as a last resort.

No, I know you can run windows game on Linux OS with Wine

but I don't know how much of an impact on the FPS running it on wine will do

How many good new games require the new version of direct x?

Quite a few, I'd go with Vista or greater for gaming in your case, as both have full support for SATA drives, and DirectX versions above 9.0c.

Windows XP will last you about 2 and half years before it goes into un-support status. I'd suggest getting a more 'newer' Windows operating system such as Vista or 7, otherwise: Linux.

Why the heck would you want to put Linux on a gaming PC?

Just get Windows 7 and shut up.

Might as well compare a PC to a toaster when talking about windows vs linux.

Windows is obvious choice.

Are you saying Linux is useless compared to Windows or that Windows and Linux are two completely different OS's?

You're really going to want W7 sooner or later. May as well get it now.
