I don't think the monitor would just go like this.
It sounds like more like a GPU problem, but as I haven't inspected it, can't say for sure.

Do be sure that the display cable is properly connected.

Well, my dad got it to work somewhat last night. It was very dark and had black lines, but it was displaying something. Right now, it's on, but there is no display. If that's a GPU problem, then we're forgeted because they bought the computer 3 or so years ago, and we're not rich. We're broke, to be honest. My dad makes about $11 an hour in a 6-7 hour day. So, hopefully it's the monitor.

It is.

Implying that a GPU is more than a monitor.

well
I'm not good with parts of computers, but I'm good with using one. :/

Unless you want a heavy duty gaming GPU, they range from $30 to $70-80 for the basic ones.

Is it just the display or can you hook up other monitors fine?
If you're sure it's the monitor, a little capacitor might have popped in the monitor, causing the backlight to seize. This is very easy to fix, all it requires is a 10¢ part. There are tutorials online how to do this, my brother salvaged lots of monitors with this.
Disregard, I just seen that it was a CRT monitor.
Get an LCD one. They're cheap now-a-days, and consume less energy.

Nonono, I think you read wrong. His personal monitor is a CRT.

No, it's an LCD. My monitor is a CRT. I can't move it, so I can't try other monitors at the moment.

I turned off the monitor, turned it back on. It buzzed, displayed the Acer logo, kept buzzing, started working but the display was dark, then it went to a black screen and started buzzing again. I'm shutting it off for a bit to see if it works.

That sucks.
Do you need a hug? <3

hi
So, we got a new monitor. It's an Acer, but w/e.
Also, our router died yesterday, and we just got it replaced a few minutes ago.
