Author Topic: Emo- May the Emo Gods Grant Us more Whiny Vocals and Twinkly Guitars  (Read 1653 times)

Before you're like "haha emo go cut yourself friend XD" lemme take the time to explain what Emo is.

Emo is a sub-genre of rock music featuring melodic guitars and confessional lyrics. It is not about slashing wrists, handicapped haircuts and crying. The genre was pretty much corrupted into a clothing scene for whiny teenagers, and effectively ruined a great genre. Perhaps the biggest offshoot of the emo genre is screamo. Screamo is usually more aggressive and dissonant than emo, and as the name implies has screamed vocals. Emo itself is an offshoot of the emotive hardcore, or emocore genre, which included bands such as Rites of Spring and Drive Like Jehu. In the 90s the genre was led by such acts as Sunny Day Real Estate, Cap'n Jazz, Mineral, and to a lesser extent Weezer. A lot of people nowadays confuse pop-punk for emo and metalcore for screamo, while they couldn't be further apart. The modern emo scene isn't as popular but is quite active underground.

I will now post some good emo tracks.

Early Emotive Hardcore:
Rites of Spring - For Want Of
Drive Like Jehu - Here Come The Rome Plows
(Not exactly Dashboard Confessional is it?)

90s Emo:
Jawbreaker - Kiss The Bottle
Sunny Day Real Estate - Seven (This is the band pictured at the top)
Weezer - El Scorcho
Cap'n Jazz - Little League
Mineral - If I Could

Modern Emo:
Joan of Arc - Post Coitus Rock
Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate) - Keep What You Have Built Up Here
Snowing - So I Shotgunned A Bear and Went Back to Bed(this band actually broke up this month ;_; )
Moving Mountains - Alastika

Screamo:
Saetia - Some Natures Catch No Plagues
Circle Takes the Square - Interview At The Ruins
I Would Set Myself On Fire For You - Six
Pianos Become the Teeth - Houses We Die In
Orchid - I Am Nietzsche

Modern Post-Hardcore with elements of Emo:
Thursday - Cross Out the Eyes
Thrice - So Strange I Remember You
Glassjaw - Mu Empire

And that's it. Hopefully you've gained a greater understanding of what emo is and have found some new music to enjoy.

I'm tired of seeing these topics, someone make a music megathread.

Well no one appears to be bothered about all the "Making a new computer" threads, so I doubt anyone will take up the opportunity.

At least this guy put some time into the topic, well done good sir.

Thanks. It took me like half an hour.

@Belogna Eventually we'll run out of genres. I have a feeling this fad won't last one much longer.
