Dead Island for the PS3 help

Hi I just got Dead Island the new zombie killing game last week and I amat the part in the game where you must escort Ope(The Shaman) to the catacombs of his clan. The problem is a checkpoint has been placed over my save and either I die or the Survivor dies and I have to try again. There is a Thug, about 5 Walkers, and one of those new zombies that are in the forests. They sprint and have no hands. How can I get past this? The Shaman also says something like "My Resurrected Brattas are great warriors."
