Author Topic: Screwing up while recording.  (Read 650 times)

So, I tried to record myself as I am trying to learn "Piano Man" by Billy Joel on Sheet Music, and I can play about the first quarter fine (I started less than an Hour ago). So I decide to record that bit to put into creativity. As soon as I put the Jack in the the Keyboard, The jack to my laptop, and the jack to my headphones in, I can't remember anything. I tried several times and I still messed up. Out of anger, I ripped all the equipment off and played the song again. I played it perfectly that time. Is this something that only happens to me? or is it something that happens to people all across the board? It's really irritating, and I just don't have the money to rent out a recording booth down at Music & Arts.

Yeah, I record bands in my free time, and I've noticed that the drummers have a harder time keeping time when the tape is rolling (so to speak).  What I would do, is just set it up, and let the recorder roll as you try to play it a few times.  After a while, you'll forget that you're recording and you'll do it perfect.  Then you just edit out everything else, and you're good.

Thing is, It's hard to forget when you've got headphones on and a glow in the corner that you know is recording you. I'll try shutting that stuff out though.

Arrg. I still can't put it out of mah head.

Also, it helps to practice it to the point where you can do it without thinking, and try performing it for like family members and friends and stuff, it helps take the edge off recording.  Do you use a metronome?  Do you think it would help?

I have a Metronome, but it's internal so it would go in with the recording. But, I can make it sound like other things, like drums, and specific beats, so maybe that would work. I can't practice anymore for tonight though, As I've been kicked out of the piano room so I don't keep everyone up.
I will try that bit about preforming in front of others though

You could go to Music and Arts and pick up at $10-20 metronome/tuner.  It never hurts to have one of those.

If you're using something like audacity, you can create a track, turn on your keyboard's metronome, and let that go for a while, so you'll have seperate click track that you can delete after you get the part down.

Read title as "Screwing while recording".

I am disappoint.

Hell, That's genius. It's not really a metronome problem though, At least I don't think. I just don't play the right notes when I'm recording, Even If i'm reading the music. Sorry if I'm sounding like some whiney weirdo that has an impossible to solve problem

Yeah, recording puts on a layer of nervousness much like performing does because you just wanna get it right.  Good luck, and practice tons, you can only get better!
