Well, the pony thread isn't done, there still needs posting to be done in there. It shouldn't be archived until its done.

No, because threads aren't deleted when they get old. They're still there.
In a way we already have an archive, the several hundreds of pages of threads you can go back to and view

Plus, who would decide whether a thread is notable?
