Chrome runs every tab in a separate process so a page breaking doesn't make the whole browser crash.

I only had 2 tabs open...

Just hit shift+esc you'll see that extensions like Flash also use up a process.

None of the browsers are slow.
They were even measured. If any are faster than each other, it was by an unmeasurable amount of time.
maybe not the newer ones, but like a couple of versions ago IE was slow
