sounds not playing through headphones?

so i got a new laptop recently and whatnot, and it's working great except for one problem;

youtube videos and system sounds and everything won't play through my headphones, the only thing that will play through them is my friend's voice when i try to voice chat him on steam
can anyone provide a solution to this please?

did u try a different set of headphones? it might not be the computer it might be the headphones but that seems unlikely since it only comes through on steam...
