But it kind of defeats the purpose of it being a touch screen, right?

Wouldn't work for iPods.
iPod Touch 4G has the audio jack on the bottom.
Not to mention "audio jack." :P

Not really.
Adding buttons to a touch screen device still leaves the touch screen operational.

touch screen sucks for games.

in when mobile apple seems to be trying its best to stop people from truly enjoying themselves.

If I were to design something like this, is would kinda be a case

all one unit, and the dock connector swings up to let the phone connect

brb making a quick sketchup

My only concern is how the left part of the controller would work--you'd have to plug it into the audio jack. I honestly don't know just how much data can be sent through it, I know you can control volume with certain earbuds but that's about it.
Maybe the other way around, A and B could be volume up and down, and the D-Pad and stuff would be on the other side? Because A and B are only two controls. Two functions, volume up and volume down.

I'm pretty sure it does more than that. The official iPhone headphones with the controller have 3 buttons on them.

This is a really old concept.

Using the square app you can swipe a credit card and transfer funds with it, it plugs into the audio jack.

i'm a poor, iTouchless irishman so I just put HBL on my PSP along with some emulators and ROMs of games I enjoyed as a child (Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island <3 <3 <3)
