Stubborn, yes, but calling them idiots is unfair.

iirc the yanks were using the nukes because the Japanese would have fought to the last man and a continental invasion would leave both sides with atrocious losses.
sure the nukes were an atrocity themselves, but mainly because they killed so many so quickly
