there are a total of 12 grades over here, and generally what teachers do is make the 11th grade absolute hell in prep for the 12th grade (which is a stuffton easier)

It's the same in the U.S. Most people start applying for college at the beginning of 12th grade, so the GPA at the end of 11th is what really counts. Also by 12th grade, pretty much everyone has almost all of their requirements so they don't have to take a full schedule and can just take a bunch of electives.
