Author Topic: Is it possible to buy a new processor for a computer?  (Read 628 times)

Title, and I know nothing of computers, so cut me some slack. I was thinking of getting a new processor for games and such, but my laptop sucks pretty bad, so..

for a laptop? oy. if you don't know anything about computers I wouldn't recommend dissecting a laptop. it's much more difficult. you can try, though.

You should probably get a real computer or download game booster.

no wait nevermind, mispost

For a laptop?

Good luck disassembling the entire unit.

In theory you can, but you'll more than likely have issues with it. Mobile processors are a bitch and a half.

I have a AMD Athlon 64+ Processor 3800+, ~2.4GHz. I want to get a Intel Core Two Duo. Is this an upgrade or downgrade? (Sorry I know nothing about computer parts.)

If you send it to a computer expert for a replacement part, then it doesn't matter if YOU can do it or not.  It's certainly possible.

Intel?  No.

frankly you'd be getting a new computer
still an upgrade

Even if you could manage to put in a more powerful processor chances are it will overheat often as the laptops are built to stay just below overheating with their factory settings, even trying to overclock a CPU a tiny bit in a laptop could fry it.

Also I'd like to point out that usually a laptop has a much more powerful CPU than a GPU so you wouldn't get any gains increasing the CPU as the GPU will likely be the one bottlenecking you.

Thank you
