Author Topic: Ancient Army Matchup  (Read 572 times)

I'm bored and curious, so I've created this to see what the forums thinks on the idea of ancient armies at their peaks facing off.

Suggested Layout:
Contestants (Mongols vs Romans)
Winner (Mongols, duh)
Why (Mobility)

I don't expect this to be a smashing hit, but whatever. No gunpowder.

Have at.

wait..
what are we supposed to do?...

Winner: Romans
Why: Romans are awesome

Mongols have eety peety tiny army.

Mongols for awesome Mongolness

America would win of course.

Kingdom of Wu in modern-day China. Easy: led by Sun Tzu.
~500 B.C.E

America would win of course.

You mean all the Native-Americans? 'Cause this is during ancient times.

redneck murricuh

I still think Mongols. Rome had mostly heavy infantry, and too few cavalry and archers to compete with a highly mobile ranged army like the Mongols. The Greeks under Xenophon's command had the same trouble with the Persians (Not 100% sure he was leading them right then, Clearchus maybe.) Thry only made it because they used slings, which the Romans didn't.

Pick two ancient armies and say who would win and why.
