Author Topic: Hammer Tutorial Video  (Read 2740 times)

Well I was searching google, trying to find out how to use some of these mapping programs and I found this one site that is a video tutorial for Hammer. Well it really helped me out and I understand how to start using the software. The narrator has a british accient but you can still understand him, but he says words that sometimes you really can't understand because he mumbles. But it is a very good tutorial for beginners who really want to make that special map in Blockland Retail.

Heres the link, it requires you to download it.

Bloody hell, nice find.  :cookieMonster:

Well, while I haven't followed your link you posted and obviously can't vouch for its quality I CAN say that in my experience, the pains of setting up Hammer or Quark or any of those Interior-making programs with all their hacky plugins and such is not worth it, even if you do have a british guy like me telling you how.

I much prefer Torque Constructor. Its free, intuitve and requires no hacky plugins, funky exporters or damn WAD files. Head over to www.garagegames.com to get a copy. It works very similiar to Hammer and quark, perhaps easier and there is nothing to setup because it is designed around TGE (The base of BL).

Constructor is worth your time, hammer and quark are not.

You didn't have to get so offensive, I do use Constructor, but I'm still new to the whole experience of this mapping stuff. I don't know how to make a terrain file, or those files you need to be able to put it into a server. But I'm learning how to make models out of constructor but for some reason it isn't doing much. I saw a picture that garagegames did and I would love to make that or do something for blockland and here is a pick of it.

These models are remarkable, and would love to make something similar to it. I wonder why people haven't made those models and put them into servers on Blockland Retail, but then again that would cause major lag.

And why would it cause major lag? Constructor is made for the torque engine.

I try limiting myself to 2000 Surfaces max, exporters seem to have a bit of trouble trying to export more; Plus it can take a while to relight scene with more.

And why would it cause major lag? Constructor is made for the torque engine.

It wouldn't cause major lag if you have a decent computer.
Also, is there a carve feature in Torque?
Where I could select two shapes that are colliding, choose cut, and it will make a hole with the shape of a circle in the square lets say?
I find that very useful, and can't find it in Torque.
Any help is appreciated,
thank you.

Yes, there is a 'carve' tool. It is called 'Subtract' though and it works with any shapes you can make.

Its quite simple really. Assuming you used textures from the 'interiors' folder then all you need to do is use the Legacy DIF Exporter and save the resulting file into Base>data>Interiors folder. If your textures aren't all there then copy them to the interiors folder. Then go ingame (you need the mission editor) go to world creator then go interiors>base>blahblahblah>Yourinteriornamehere and it should spawn. remember to relight the scene and your done.

Lag is not a problem really, but if your worried then go easy on the details. I have never had any lag problems from interiors. Its emitters and bricks which need constant updating that cause the trouble.

I mean I have a really good computer, but I have a laptop. And we all know most laptops don't have good video cards and for that I lag when I hit either powerful graphics or I hit 12,000 bricks in a crowded area.
