PCs are generally more expensive because they use better components. Also, They aren't hard to maintain. And they last longer. While your out buying a whole new "Xbox 720" or whatever, I'll be buying better components for my compy, for substantially less.
My old PC was running on pixie-dust for about five years, it had so many problems it wasn't funny.
But even with all that going wrong, it kept on going, dedicated to letting me play my games, eventually it gave out when the bios got corrupted.
It took five years of running on dust for it to die, not counting the 5+ years before it started breaking which was when my Brother built it and used it himself, so that PC lasted a good 10 years, how long can you expect a modern console to last before breaking?
