Author Topic: Cache file sharing?  (Read 700 times)

Would it be possible to share cache files with them working? Say, someone had a server loaded and you wanted to load faster, you would get their cache file and would it work?

Cache files can get huge so it would likely make the loading take even longer...

It would take longer to download the cache than it is to download the files at the server.

Sure, I think you could transfer cache files between computers. The download might take just as long or longer though over the internet.

Having said that, if you were to transfer it over a separate program, it could end up faster - considering TGE's binary transfer is so slow.

Nah that's horse stuff.

Nah that's horse stuff.

I think you will find that torque's binary transfer is comparatively slow compared to that utilised by other applications.

Yeah I think that too.

Binary transfers are fairly simple things, I'd like some proof.

Yeah I think that too.

Well that was valuable.

Well I don't have time to prove it now. Simplest method is to get a list of add-ons I dont have, put them on my BL server and then time how long it takes to download. Then I could upload it to mediafire or something and see how long it takes there, but I don't feel like doing that now. Happy?

Yeah absolutely, you sure proved your point. Great job kid.

Let it be known throughout the land that Altiris was right and that Torque binary transfers are slower by a factor of "I don't feel like telling you that right now."

Simple as this - When I download a modification in game using RTB's mod manager it takes significantly more time that when I download it directly in my browser.

I don't see you suggesting ideas or giving support that I am wrong. You asked for proof so I gave you something better, a method you could try and see on your own. Just because I haven't done it yet doesn't mean I am wrong. I never stated anywhere that TGE was in fact slower, I just gave my opinion.
