Author Topic: Sister's computer making buzzing noise  (Read 1697 times)

It's a weird buzzing noise that I can't really describe, it's coming from the fan or the fan's motor (are these even separate?) but I don't know what's wrong with it.  The computer is like a year and a half old so it's not very old.  The computer starts up and runs fine just it's a rather loud noise.

If there's any other info you need to help me figure out what's wrong I'll do my best to answer.

the fan or the fan's motor (are these even separate?)
yes
the fan is the fan part
the motor is the part that turns it

No I mean like if they're attached or not.

Like in theory you could take the fan off and just use the same motor if your fan broke.   Or you could take the motor out and use the same fan part.

>Get a can of compressed air
>open 'er up
>spray the fan and stuff with it (don't hold it upside down or in a position where liquid in the can could leak if it were an open-top cup, because most compressed air cans use liquid nitrogen or something)

might work
If you do anything wrong i'm not responsible

edit: also this is from personal experience, but if it's really loud there may be another problem
does it sound like a car with a bad motor but quieter, or like stuff is colliding?

I have no idea what a car with a bad motor sounds like, but it doesn't sound like stuff is colliding.

It's not super loud, probably like the volume of an average person talking.  Probably a bit quieter than that.

Also note it sounds like a spinning noise so I don't think it's the power supply.

in that case it's probably dust buildup, especially if it's a desktop.

and by car with a bad motor, i basically meant the sound that some motorcycles make when they speed up
i wonder if that's why they're called choppers...

Just tried dusting the problem still exists.  I am almost positive it's the fan motor, is there anything I can do?

It might be one of those fans that goes haywire when it heats up a lot.

Cpu Whine.

Your problem.

It started after we turned it on after being off for like 15 hours.

buy a new fan

Fans don't cost much at all, I'd suggest just replacing it.

Sounds like it could be that one of the fan bearings gone wonk.

I had the same issue happen to my GPU's fan but it stopped after a few days without me touching it.
