In Minecraft, is there a way to view the player list of a server without actually going in the server?

I don't think so, as there isn't really a server list like there is in blockland; but it's very possible I'm wrong.

the only thing I can think of is if the server is registered to one of those server roster sites, those usually show basic info on a server.

oh and also AuBot on EsperNet can do a "!check <ip goes here>" to show ping and the amount of players
