So I'm gonna build a comp in the summer and sell this old hunk of junk but keep the hard drive and transfer the files and settings from that hard drive. Like programs, all stuff on my documents, etc. Is it possible?

Files is possible, while downgrading to winders severn, I put them on a flash drive.
Dunno about settings.

wait nvm settings don't matter
But this old comp has XP and my new comp is gonna have 8.
(Program compatibility errors...?)

Transferring programs will work for some, such as games that aren't reliant on steam or a source like that. Games you install from a cd can easily be copied over to another hard drive and still function properly. Although be sure to get all of the files associated with that program if you plan to copy it over, otherwise you might run into problems. What do you mean by settings?

Also i've never attempted to transfer programs from xp to windows 8, and by transfer I think you mean simply copying and pasting them into your new hard drive or etc?

um
huh
just plug it into the computer you want to move everything to?

Your new computer (if it's a desktop) should have space for two hard drives. Just plug them both in and then use a partition copy utility to copy everything over.
