I love the vocals in Time by Pink Floyd though.
It really just depends on what the song is like.

It also mystifies me as to why there's no general term for a piece of music, regardless of whether or not it contains singing.

The singing is supposed to be a form of storytelling or conveying a message. It's not meant to be the most musically deep part of the song.

You're not alone. Aside from about 5 dc Talk songs and a few rock songs (iron man, brick in the wall), none of the songs I listen to have vocals (aside from choirs)
