Package manager is kinda bad for fedora
you're telling me, an avid fedora user, about the stuffty package manager it has?

Try Arch Linux with Enlightenment 17 and SLiM.

Call me crazy but it works great on an Asus Eee PC 1025C with only 1 GB of RAM and an Intel Atom processor.
Only do this if you have a horrible processor and 256MB-1GB RAM. Otherwise, this setup probably isn't for you.

what DO I use then, and WHERE DO I get it?

Go to here and download ubuntu 13.04, 12.04 LTS stinks, so after you get it burn your richard it into a disc in windows MAKE SURE ITS >700MB insert to your disc drive then reboot your pc and go to the boot from what mode in BIOS select CD-DVD and clik enter it will boot you into ubuntu and there you [i think] have it if the problem continues then you have a forgeted up computer/disk/processor/ram/whatever the forget i can think of

YES.  DISTRO FIGHTS.  I loving LOVE THEM.  let people use what they want.  some people actually use computers to do things instead of endlessly customizing their desktop in search of the one that will use less than 40 mb of their 8gb of ram or whatever.  Jesus christ, the OP asked why Ubuntu was loving up, so help him with Ubuntu, don't tell him to go download the distro you use because "it's better", "unity sucks", or "ubuntu uses resources".
