Author Topic: Beta City - Solo jump to the museum  (Read 2305 times)

Don't bother asking yourself "Wtf is this thread?" and instead just take notes.

If you've played Zapk's Prop Hunt server, sometimes those pesky props get in to the museum and you need to find a way in to chase them down, so you have to call over a friend to jump up on top of to get on the roof. However, you can do this alone by utilizing a ramp:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKKu1SvOUlg

1. Stand on a ramp and jump to the top of the white building by holding W or S (do not press A or D)
2. Face the museum and tap W to slow yourself down (do not start moving forward before step 4)
3. Continue doing this until you are far back enough to do step 4 and jumping almost straight up
4. Hold W so that you land while moving forward and as close to the edge of the flat surface as possible
5. Raid the exhibits!

Everyone knows if you jump down a ramp you start to go faster, but no one's ever really found out why/how/how to control it. For fun, I've been attempting to do so, and this is an example of how you can gain noticeable distance with minimal pre-jump space. Plus, it's not just "look how far you can go," but a useful technique in one of the more popular gamemodes recently. The key to the technique in the video is that you began jumping by standing on a ramp, and there's a bit more to it like the direction of the ramp but I can't fully explain it yet.

Strange kind of subject for this game, I know, but there you go.

I moved this from Gallery because I'll eventually turn it into a topic all about speed control.

Why didn't I think of this...

Oh hey this is pretty useful. Thanks!

Yea ramp physics have been weird for a while. I love jumping from pine trees

Speaking of pine trees, here is what I've found so far:

You can gain approximately:
  • 3.1 velocity from flat ground (does not stack)
  • 6.3 velocity from 25 degree ramps (7 times)
  • 9.2 velocity from 45 degree ramps (3 times)
  • 10.4 velocity from pine trees (2 times)
  • 11.6 velocity from 72 degree ramps (1 time)
  • N/A velocity from 80 degree ramps (N/A times)

By times I mean if you boost that many times in a row, or at least hit the equivalent velocity of doing so, it resets your jump to the default height which removes the possibility of boosting. However, if you slow down enough before you hit the maximum number of boosts, you can still use them. It's a way to get a specific boost of velocity in a certain direction whenever you want based on the ramp you jump off of.

Interesting stuff
Have you tried chaining ramps?

A little, and you can certainly change your stored boosts' power by bouncing on to a ramp of a different degree. It doesn't change it right away all the time, which is most easily indicated by how high you're jumping, but it can change it to both a greater or a lesser power regardless.

And the reason I'm doing all this is because I'm making a challenge based around it. It could be a neat server in general, but that way if someone completes every level then by then they'll have learned all about ramp mechanics, and would know how to do fun things like speed themselves up in DMs for surprise flanks or whatever.

if you use your forward momentum from another ramp you can basically glide up another ramp and get a lot of vertical velocity

Yes, I understand how trimping works. I wanted more specific information, such as if velocity is increased by a set amount or if it is multiplied with a constant, etc.
