Wat. At GameStop and stuff you can buy M rated games when you're 17. That's what the ESRB rating says on the back: 17+, and when I went to pick up Halo 4 they asked if I was 17.
oh, I thought the esrb thing is just some stuff for soccer moms who are overprotective
But then again I use steam and not gamestop so yeah lol

Happy Birthday, enjoy it!

Well it is a guide. ESRB has no legal grounds in terms of laws, its just for consideration for those purchasing games. Most retailers do adopt it, though, to prevent youngin's from buying games like GTA on their own, since they do reserve the right to deny service.

Where are you from?
I'm from NY, it's always been 18 though whenever I went. I remember I went to the midnight release of GTA San Andreas back in like 2004. I was only like 12 years old then, but I still remember them asking for ID to prove I was 18. I had to run out in the car and get my mom.
