There are still some Mini-Empire servers when I am on, but the main problem is just that they are mostly hosted by low-quality server hosts. Still some good MERP servers, but very rare to find.

Have you ever played Age of Empires, Civilization, or any other strategy game along those lines? It's pretty much like that. It's not turn based like Civ, but it's really fun if you're on a good server.

Another reason why the genre is becoming abandoned is because Mini Empires have too many themes and not everyone can appeal to the theme. My personal favorite Mini Empire themes are arctic ones and WW2 themes.
