Don't change the IP in the properties file.
Oh, well I haven't done a Minecraft server in a while... soooooo..

Alright, I have two people giving me different directions.

I have the server running with the server ip blank, like it should be. I have all the white-listed stuff ready to go and I can join it from this computer. I am using the ip4 address to join it and it works. When I put in the exact same address on the laptop, I get nothing.

What do I do now? I have seen videos and when they port forward, they set it to 25565, which is what mine is on. How could it be my ports? I have all the right things set in the server settings or else I wouldn't be able to connect to it at all.

use the external IP address to join from another computer

Still says "Can't connect to server" on the laptop when I use the external ip.

Post a screenshot of your router PF page please.

this is so confusing

are you supposed to port forward your external ip or the port 25565?

You are supposed to port forward the port 25565. Your external IP is only used as an ID so the internet knows what computer you are trying to talk to. If you are on the same network as the computer which is hosting your server, you can use "localhost" to join your server. Otherwise, you need an external IP to know what computer to connect to.

-Blok-, did you forward the port 25565 under the UDP protocol because Minecraft requries UDP ports. Here is a test you can do to see if your UDP ports are forwarded correctly, go to this website, http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ and put in 25565 in the port box. Your external IP is in the IP box automactly, make sure your server is on and then press the check button. If the flag is green, your ports are good. If it's red, you forwarded it wrong. Make sure your server is on and your computer's firewalls are allowing Minecraft, otherwise the test will fail no matter what.

whatever you do, do NOT use hamachi. whoever else uses it in a party w/ you, can access your private files

I got it working. Ssssssank you very much, guys.
