Author Topic: Question about Sydney Funnel Web spider.  (Read 2552 times)

Okay, so I got in a conversation with my friend's boyfriend about spiders and he keeps insisting that the Sydney Funnel Web spider can bite through a steel toe boot.

Since I'm pretty sure that's dumb and fake I'd like some help citing this. I've looked everywhere and I've only seen people on like wiki answers say that they can do that. I've watched a documentary about it and still nothing mentioned about that incredible power. I've heard they can bite through soft shoes but nothing more.

He also claimed the fangs to be two inches which what I've read they get up to 7mm. Help me fact check this cause I'm pretty sure I'm right but I want to be positive.

So if anyone can help me google an accurate fang size or about the power of one that'd be useful.

I've heard about the Steel caps, and they do have large and very powerful fangs.
I highly doubt they could bite through the actual steel toe, but they have absolutely no problem piercing straight through your shoes, gloves, nails or whatever.
Their poison is forgeted though, not a very nice spider at all.

it was an old wives tale that used to be passed around when i was young

complete bullstuff. the fangs aren't 2 inches either.

don't get me wrong, they're nasty buggers. we occasionally find them in the very bottom of our pool submerged with a small air bubble coming after our feet. but no, they can't go through steel.

Considering the largest spiders are 5cm (~2 inches) I don't think the fangs would have a chance of being that long.

good that theres no pictures of them in here

I really hope you have one of those gated plates covering the bottom of your bathtub drain...

It's fangs are definitely not 2 inches

Looks like one mean son of a bitch.

why do people believe such dumb things lol

Alright this pretty much confirms what I thought. I knew the two inches thing was complete stuff but I figured he might just be over exaggerating that part. But he won't let the steel toe boot thing go even though I asked him to cite where he got that info. He just used "Real life experience" as his cite.
